Personality: With his twin brother, both he and Hikaru are playful tricksters who love to tease and act in order to entertain people. Although he is just as playful and mischievous as his brother, Kaoru is the more insightful and easy-going of the two. Mature and calm, he understands the people around him and has good self-control despite being the younger twin. Being with his elder brother reverts him to a "little devil". Because of his maturity and emotions, it is implied that his size magic is more growth related.

History: The Hitachiin twins were born in an area in which powers varied by class. Most of the magic-users were of the wealthy class. However at their childhood years, Hikaru and Kaoru didn't have any powers. They were normal twins who were doted on constantly and loved playing with their maid. One of the games being a guessing game of which brother is who. One day, the twins told her to play the game in order to get the code for the family safe. At the very same night, the maid broke her promise and stole from the safe, telling the twins that she could never tell them apart. Heartbroken that they weren't considered as unique individuals, the twins resorted to relying on themselves. It was then that they both started shrinking due to their sour mood.

Since then, Kaoru and Hikaru grew up distant from their peers, only conversing and playing with them if they could guess who is who... which never happened. Using their new powers, they pulled off cruel pranks on other people with Kaoru's magic more on growth and Hikaru's shrinking. Because of their new magic, their mother decided to put them to Ouran Academy until she can get them to Arcane Magia Academy, a school that could help them with their powers. It was at Ouran Academy that they met a student named Tamaki Suoh, a man who wanted them to join his Host club. After much persistence and time with the strange man, Hikaru and Kaoru realized that not all people are bad and there was a chance they could be unique, making them join the Host Club. For a while, they made friends with the host club... until their mother finally got them into Arcane Magia. At first, Hikaru and Kaoru did not want to leave Ouran, but through convincing with Tamaki and a non-magic user named Haruhi, they decided to go into the new academy to hone their skills at size manipulation and learn new things, promising to write letters to their friends back home.

Kaoru and Hikaru are now at the academy as students, still into their playful ways. Kaoru shares a room with Jack.
